Keynote: Grading in Hollywood - Walter Volpatto & Mark Todd Osborne

Walter Volpatto will be sharing his experience grading blockbusters over his 15yr career. He will be talking to Mark Todd Osborne CSI is an industry veteran that has been grading for 25 yrs, across feature films, TV, commercials and music videos.

Walter Volpatto, senior colorist, Company 3 Hollywood is an industry veteran whose credits include 2019 Academy-Award Best Picture Winner Green Book, directed by Peter Farrelly; Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan; Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson; and, most recently, Amazon Studios’ critically-acclaimed series Homecoming. He started in digital intermediate before progressively shifting toward fully digital workflows while navigating emerging technologies such as HDR.

Mark Todd Osborne CSI is a freelance senior colorist for features, television episodic, commercials, music videos and branded content. His credits include “The Act” for Hulu and feature films ‘It Follows’ (Radius), ‘Satanic Panic’ (Fangoria), ‘Lowriders’ (Blumhouse),’Beyond Skyline'(Lionsgate) and ‘Need for Speed’ (Disney/Dreamworks), plus commercial campaigns for Lexus, Toyota, EA Games, Wienerschnitzel, LG, Coca-Cola, Audi, BMW, Target, & XBOX.

Kevin Shaw CSI is co-founder of Colorist Society International – the first organization to represent professional colorists – and the International Colorist Academy (iColorist). Warren Eagles has an extensive 25 year career with experience in all forms of color correction. Warren co-founded the ICA (iColorist) with Kevin and runs his own shop grading and running training classes. His credits include commercials for Qantas, Ford, Mitsubishi, Revlon, and Tooheys, mainstream UK and Australian dramas and documentaries including “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”.

Marc, Gary and Blake will discuss film restoration – sharing their best practices, insider knowledge and hacks from a from decades of working experience.

Marc Wielage CSI, VP Color & Workflow, Chroma, has worked in Hollywood for 41 years as a colorist, working on feature films such as Star Wars, Return of the Jedi, Dances with Wolves, Die Hard, and roughly a thousand other films, as well as 75 American network television series and more commercials, promos, and music videos than he can possibly remember. He and colorist Henry Santos comprise the boutique post house Chroma, working mainly on longform projects and feature restoration.

Gary Adams, Product Specialist In Broadcast and Digital Film Restoration, Blackmagic Design, is a recognized specialist in motion picture digital film restoration, having worked in the broadcast, production and post-production industry for over 50 years. Gary is a Blackmagic Design product specialist on digital film restoration and transfer as well as broadcast switching, distribution, and acquisition.

Blake Jones CSI is a world-renowned colorist and instructor who has worked on films, TV and commercials – including for Heineken, Ford, Mastercard and Amstel. He is the author of two books on the subject as well as the daVinci Resolve operator manual. Blake ha extensive restoration experience and recently completed the DI restoration of the official Olympic films for the IOC.

Tips and tricks on operating your own Color Boutique - Juan Cabrera

Juan Cabrera will give advice and talk about his experience building a Boutique color studio from the ground-up. Topics will include equipment, calibration, security, smart hardware & software recommendations, relationships with other colorists, ways to compete with big facilities, interactions with clients, and more!
Juan runs his own Color Boutique: LightBender in Santa Monica, California. He has over 15 years of experience as a colorist both in Europe and in the US. He won two AIS awards for his work as Stereographer on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and has been nominated for an HPA Color award for the show The Alienist: Angel of darkness. He has delivered features and TV shows for Hulu, Amazon, Sony, and Paramount to name a few. He often works with emerging technologies, being one of the pioneers of the new wave of digital Stereography over 10 years ago, and working in HDR for the last 3 year.

Three experienced colorists will talk to CSI Board Member Sarah Priestnall about working in the film industry as a woman. While things have changed a lot over recent decades, women are still significantly underrepresented in this industry – why is this, and what does it mean for those that do work in film and for the industry itself? Whether you are a woman starting out in film or you work with women in grading, this is a don’t miss panel with panelists CJ Dobson, Junbin Chen, and Andrea Chlebak.

 

Sarah Priestnall has worked in the post production industry for many years, both for post facilities and for manufacturers. She began as a runner at Molinare in Soho, became a tape op and an editor and progressed up to managing teams and facilities. Her proudest achievement is managing the team that created what is sometimes referred to as the first digital intermediate – O Brother Where Art Thou? She has also held management positions with Hollywood Intermediate, a pioneering data-based post facility, Codex and now Pixelworks, where she works with the TrueCut team.

JZ Speaks! - Joachim Zell

Joachim Zell is a consultant on production and post-production workflows, ACES and Imaging Science. For 12 years he served as VP of Technology and Imaging Science at EFILM/Deluxe, where he designed and monitored production workflows from onset production to the movie release. Previously he was VP of Advanced Technology at Technicolor Thomson in Burbank and before that he was Marketing Manager Americas at Grass Valley Thomson.

During his time in London Joachim worked as Product Manager digital film systems for Pandora Int. He supports SMPTE as Hollywood Section Manager and serves on the ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council DI team that defined the ASC CDL standard and acts as Co-Chair of the MITC Next-Generation Cinema Display committee. He holds the position of ACES Project Vice Chair at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. In February 2020 Joachim became a board member of the HPA. Joachim holds a master’s degree in Film and Television Engineering and was co-writer on 4x image processing patents.

En este panel queremos abordar en la vida de coloristas de tres generaciones y tres países diferentes, les preguntaremos cómo ha sido su proceso para empezar a hacer color, que desafíos han tenido, qué técnicas usan para renovarse y seguir mejorando, así como que retos les plantéa el día a día y como ven la labor del colorista al futuro.
Eduardo Sierra, AAC CSI: Es el colorista con mayor experiencia profesional en actividad de la Argentina. Su experiencia inicial fue en laboratorio cinematografico y es uno de los primeros coloristas en transfer de película a video en Argentina; su trabajo se combina entre su desempeño en Intermedio Digital (DI )y las últimas tecnologías de corrección de color de cinematografía digital. Su currículum posee innumerables realizaciones cinematográficas y publicitarias actualmente mantiene su actividad profesional como consultor de color y colorista Senior en Metrovisión S.A. Y Cinecolor Digital.. Fundador de Cinefoto, AAC, y  la escuela Punto cine 
Carlos Villafuerte: Con apenas 18 años se mudo de México a España para estudiar cine. Con el tiempo descubrió su vocación por el color, siete años más tarde continúo el camino como colorista participando en múltiples producciones , actialmente trabajo en DELUXE España, participado en series como Veneno de Netflix y 30 Monedas de HBO.
Nadia Khairat: Colorista hispano-egipcia con una sólida formación en fotografía. Actualmente vive en Berlín después de vivir y trabajar en Madrid, Londres, Praga y Abu-Dhabi. Después de estudiar medios visuales y artes y trabajar durante casi 10 años, donde aprendió sobre el flujo de trabajo y los requisitos técnicos para la postproducción, decidió especializarse en la ciencia y el arte de la corrección de color en UP.GRADE. Tiene una vasta experiencia en diferentes tipos de proyectos, desde videos musicales hasta documentales, ficción, comerciales y películas experimentales. Ha trabajado en diferentes estudios como UserT38 y la productora Specter Vision.

Geoff Smith joined AbelCine in 2015 as a Camera Technology Specialist with a focus on workflows from capture to post-production. He has been a technical editor of AbelCine’s blog since 2017.

Geoff has a background in technology from web development to content management at companies like VMware, Lucasfilm and Silicon Graphics (SGI). Prior to joining AbelCine, he worked on an independent feature as a DIT and Assistant Editor. A passionate photographer, his editorial and fine art work has been published in newspapers and magazines, as well as exhibited in New York City and online.

Originally from New York, Geoff graduated from California State University, Chico earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Design with an emphasis in Media Arts.

Keynote: Charles Poynton

20 years ago Charles Poynton established square sampling (“square pixels”) as the standard for HDTV. He is the inventor of the number 1080 found in HDTV standards, for which he was awarded SMPTE’s David Sarnoff Gold Medal.

Charles is an independent contractor specializing in the physics, mathematics, engineering, and programming of digital color imaging systems, including digital still cameras, digital video, HD/UHD/4K/8K (HDTV/UHDTV), VFX/CGI, and DI and digital cinema (D-cinema) systems.

He is involved in engineering wide colour gamut (WCG, or wide gamut color) and high dynamic range (HDR) systems, and an expert in colorspaces such as DCI P3 RGB, Adobe RGB 1998, ACES AP0/AP1, and BT.2020. He does technology forecasting, systems modelling, algorithm development, video signal processing architecture, colour characterization and calibration, image quality assessment, and expert witness work.

Charles has a PhD in Color Science from Simon Fraser University and has written a book ‘Digital Video and HD Algorithms and Interfaces’.
